The Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) is New Jersey’s state butterfly and is mostly black with a gorgeous tiled band of yellow across both wings and yellow spots and crescents along the wing margins on males, and more subtle yellow spotting across both wings and a blue waterfall-like band along the hindwings on females.
