Brown Elfin

The Brown Elfin (allophrys augustinus) is a very small copper-brown hairstreak with subtle wavelike markings near the center of the wings, slight dotting along the ventral forewing and hindwing, dark brown fringe and a generally uniform wing color though slightly darker near the body. I’ve noticed that fresh individuals have beautiful lavender flecks along the inner portion of the hindwing as well.

Even worn individuals of other similar species like Henry’s, Frosted, Hoary or Eastern Pine Elfin retain most of their markings. This is helpful in separating species even with brief views as Brown Elfins give a plainer general impression overall in my opinion.
