Dion Skipper

July 2021

The Dion Skipper (Euphyes dion) is a large tawny orange grass skipper with a notable ray or streak along the center of the ventral side hindwing. This can be difficult to pick out at times as seen in my photos but in most light it is apparent. When paired with size and proportions as well as location (usually wetland habitat) you can positively id a Dion.

When I observed this species back in July 2021 I found they absolutely loved this Sweet Pepperbush and I’d imagine they can be found on Buttonbush and other similar species as well. Look around sedge-filled areas and check wetland flowers for this species.

There’s a decent view of the central ray in this image taken with a flash. The scales at the center of the forewing are lighter than those surrounding.
