Eastern Comma
Male Light Form - May 2019
I first saw an Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma) in the yard, perched on a shed of all places. Every once in a while I will find another - usually on a hike into woods with great leaf litter.

Commas are variable on upperside hindwings but all have brilliant yellow-orange forewings with 3 spots in a line near the center. This is a very helpful field mark when trying to separate from Question Marks which have 3 spots and 1 dash in the center.

If I hadn’t seen this butterfly perch on the leaves after a short flight, I never would have found it!! The camouflage is absolutely perfect for a butterfly looking to remain inconspicuous. When this butterfly opens its wings the vibrant orange colors are absolutely fantastic. The individual pictured above is the same as the one perched on the leaves. What an amazing adaptation!!
