Great Spangled Fritillary
Male - June 2021
The Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) may be the most striking butterfly in New Jersey!! Dorsal side wing details are almost a gilded or bronzy-orange with swirling bands and lines of black spots.
Female - July 2025
As their name would suggest, this butterfly’s underside wing details shimmer and sparkle when sunlit like no other species in New Jersey!! The pearly spots are reminiscent of a glittery fireworks display.
Male - August 2021
This species is much more common in northern New Jersey where they can be seen in large numbers feeding in fields with Butterfly Weed and Wild Bergamot.
