Red Admiral

The Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a somewhat common dark brown butterfly with white flecks on the upper side forewing tips and and flourescent red-orange bands that look like flames!! Also note the tiny brown dots on the orange edge of the hindwings and a light blue detail near the inner portion.

This species has been recorded in New Jersey for the full extent of the year and it’s the only species I’ve ever seen in January!! I will usually find them in open sunny areas in the woods where they can bask.

Red Admirals will often perch on trees or logs to puddle on sap. I’ve always found it difficult to get a nice view of the ventral side of this species, but if you can get a look you’ll see a beautiful mottled brown pattern embellished with various shades of red and blue scales!!
